Why Students Stay Stuck

Most tutoring treats the symptom. Thornwick starts by diagnosing the real cause.

Knowledge Gaps

Students often miss key foundations from previous years that quietly undermine everything built on top.

Misconceptions

Students repeat the same errors without realising, because no one has ever named the pattern.

Exam Technique

Students know the maths but lose marks unnecessarily to timing, layout, and command-word mistakes.

Thornwick identifies all three before any tuition begins.

Sahra Ibrahim

Qualified Maths Teacher & Founder, Thornwick Education Group

I'm a qualified Maths teacher with a BSc in Mathematics, PGCE and Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). I have over five years of tutoring and classroom experience, and I currently teach Mathematics from Year 7 to Year 13 at an Ofsted-rated Outstanding secondary school in London.

Working with students in both the classroom and private tuition, I kept seeing the same problem. Many students were working hard, but they did not know exactly where they were losing marks or what they needed to do differently.

That's what led me to set up Thornwick Education Group.

We don't believe in generic tuition. We start with diagnostic assessment to pinpoint gaps in knowledge, misconceptions and exam technique, then use those findings to create a focused plan for improvement.

Our goal is simple: clear teaching, clear direction and measurable progress, so students always know exactly what they need to do to improve their grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions parents and students ask most.

What qualifications do your tutors have? +
All Thornwick tutors are qualified Maths teachers and examiners with excellent subject knowledge. Every tutor is vetted and DBS-checked in line with our safeguarding policy before working with a single student — you can read more on our Safeguarding page.
What is your Grade Guarantee? +
Most students reach their target grade in around 12 weeks, our average. Our Grade Guarantee is set a little beyond that: if your child hasn't reached their agreed target grade within 16 weeks of starting regular 1:1 or group tutoring, we'll continue working with them at no extra cost until they get there. This depends on consistent attendance, camera on and active participation in every session, and homework completed and submitted on time throughout. Full conditions are in our Terms & Conditions.
How do you customise lessons to my child's needs? +
Every student starts with a diagnostic assessment. From that analysis, we build a bespoke scheme of work targeting their specific gaps, misconceptions and technique issues — and every session follows it, so progress stays focused and measurable.
What is your cancellation policy? +
We require at least 48 hours' notice for any change to a booking. 1:1 sessions can be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge within that window. Group sessions run to a fixed timetable, so the same 48-hour notice lets you cancel a spot, though it can't be rescheduled. Anything cancelled with less notice is non-refundable, you simply forfeit the session, with no additional fee on top. If you want to stop tutoring altogether, see the full notice period and refund terms in our Terms & Conditions.
How often should my child attend sessions? +
All ongoing programmes include two sessions per week — we've found this gives the most consistent progress toward a target grade.
Do you offer group tutoring? +
Yes, we do offer group tutoring. Our GCSE scheme of work begins in Year 9, so groups run across Year 9, 10 and 11, kept to a maximum of 5 students and grouped by year and ability. Each group follows a bespoke scheme of work, just like our 1:1 tutoring, built around what students need most. Progress is checked through regular topic tests, along with a fuller assessment every three months to make sure earlier learning is being retained, not just recent topics.
Do you teach all exam boards? +
No — we deliberately specialise rather than cover every board. At GCSE and IGCSE level we teach AQA and Pearson Edexcel Mathematics; at A-Level, we teach Edexcel only. Our tutors are current or former examiners for these boards, so teaching stays closely built around the specification, assessment objectives and marking expectations students will actually face.
